"Rhyme Time" is an episode of The Fresh Beat Band from the first season.

Characters Present[]

Summary[]

Twist is practicing his rapping skills. When he can't find anything that rhymes with the word music, he accidentally loses his voice. Kiki, Marina, and Shout console Twist, and try to help him figure out a way to get his voice back. They decide to try finding a word that rhymes with music on their own.

Plot[]

Twist begins the episode by packing a picnic basket with food. He informs the audience that he is working on a rap about a picnic basket. He begins to sing some of his rap, but his voice first sounds raspy and then becomes excessively high-pitched. He assumes that it is because he didn't do his daily vocal warm-ups that day. In order to warm up his voice, he sings a few melodic vocal warm-ups, such as "la-la-la-la, la, ah hah" and "me, my, mo, moo." He then does some odd-looking face stretches and a lip trill while hanging down and plopping right up as a breathing exercise. He yodeled to ultimately test the efficacy of those vocal warm-ups, and the sound of him yodeling reverberated throughout his room. He was prepared to rap now that he had successfully finished his vocal warm-ups. Twist rapidly built an extremely tall sandwich that nearly fell to the ground as he sang his rap. He packs the picnic basket after placing the large sandwich inside.

Twist leaves his room and enters the lobby, where Marina, Kiki, and Shout are waiting for him. They were prepared to leave, but Kiki gave Twist some apples to pack in the picnic basket before they departed. Twist was then given an umbrella by Shout to include with the picnic basket. The last thing Marina does is give Twist a beach ball to put in the basket. Naturally, it didn't fit in. The Fresh Beats sing "Let's Play" to start the day since they all agree that it will be a great day for a picnic.

The Fresh Beats left their apartment to go to the park for lunch. They were talking about what they ought to do at the picnic while they walked along. Marina suggested that they sing at the picnic, while Kiki suggested playing games. Marina Twist agrees with Marina and raps about how they should perform a song with a pounding beat to get everyone dancing and jumping. Kiki compliments Twist on the rap he just did, and he explains how he loves rhyming words to good beats. Marina suggests that Twist should perform some raps at the picnic because he has such a strong desire to do so. It seemed like an excellent idea for Twist and the other Fresh Beats.

Kiki asked if Twist had a rap to perform at the picnic, but he, unfortunately, didn't. Twist improvised, and Kiki, Shout, and Marina offered him a beat to rap to. Twist does participate in the rap and does so while rhyming frequently. He, unfortunately, runs out of rhymes when rapping for the word "music." Twist was encouraged to try again by Kiki, Shout, and Marina, but when he did, he was still unable to rhyme the word "music." Twist is unable to complete his picnic rap because he cannot come up with a rhyme for the word "music," which makes him want to go bananas. So, it only makes sense that the Fresh Beats sing "Bananas" to cheer Twist up.

Twist persisted in trying to rhyme the word "music." He, therefore, searches the street for something that can possibly rhyme with "music." He made an attempt at saying "street," "tree," "coconut," "dolphin," "octopus," "snorkel," "flippers," "tambourine," and "bugle." None of those terms, of course, rhyme with "music." When he realized that "gong" could be a rhyme for "music," he struck the gong and began to walk erratically. Yet neither the words "gong" nor "music" rhyme. Twist falls into a trash can as a result of his erratic movements after striking the gong, and Kiki, Shout, and Marina rescue him. After that, he attempts to make "garbage can" rhyme with "music," but it doesn't.

Kiki, Shout, and Marina urge Twist to keep trying because they think he may find the rhyme. The street phone is where Twist goes next to see if "telephone" rhymes with "music," but he quickly discovers that it doesn't. The phone then rings, and Twist answers it by saying, "Hello?" while imagining that the word "hello" would rhyme with "music." He hangs up the phone after realizing that the two words don't rhyme. Twist looks for more rhymes for the word "music." The phrases "Marina's drumsticks," "Shout's ear," and "boom box" didn't rhyme with "music," despite his expectations. Twist then starts playing music on Kiki's boom box. He initially believed the term "music" would rhyme well, but because "music" and "music" are the same word, the rhyme is ineffective.

Twist begins to become increasingly anxious about coming up with a rhyme for "music." He becomes so anxious that he becomes voiceless. Twist had to play charades to demonstrate his voice loss because he was unable to speak, and Kiki, Shout, and Marina were slow to realize that he had lost his voice. Twist acts out how he misplaced something, which the other Fresh Beats comprehended. Strangely enough, despite possessing Twist's picnic basket in his hands, Shout believed that Twist had misplaced it. When Marina correctly got the hint that Twist had lost his voice, Twist excitedly pointed at her and gave her a thumbs up. Twist apparently lost his voice because he rapped so much while trying to find a rhyme for "music," according to Kiki and Shout. Twist would be unable to complete his rap song for the picnic since he was unable to speak. Twist shows Kiki, Shout, and Marina another game of charades. They understand from Twist's example that he is creating something by, interpretively, placing it in a blender and causing it to spin around. After that, Shout deduces that Twist wants a smoothie to drink.

To get Twist a smoothie for his throat, The Fresh Beats all head to The Groovy Smoothie. Naturally, they run into Melody there, and they tell her how Twist lost his voice. Twist demonstrates to Melody that he needs a wiggly-giggly watermelon smoothie to soothe his throat and perhaps restore his voice. Twist's visual interpretation is relayed verbally by Kiki, Shout, and Marina. Melody then gives Twist his wiggly-giggly watermelon smoothie. Twist consumes the wiggly-giggly watermelon smoothie that Melody gave him. Twist tries to speak, but he barely manages to utter a word.

Then, Marina translates for Twist as he begins to carry out his usual "Wouldn't it be cool if...?" sequence. Although Marina had some difficulty understanding Twist's graphic representation, she eventually understood what he was trying to convey. Twist felt it would be cool to buy a fish with a large mouth from the fish market, teach it to rap, and have the fish perform for Twist at the picnic. Although Marina acknowledges that it was a cool idea, she suggests making it more plausible by having Kiki, Shout, and she come up with a rhyme for "music" and rap for Twist during the picnic. Twist couldn't speak, but Marina could tell that he would respond by saying, "Sure, if you want to do it the easy way."

While the Fresh Beats are setting up for their picnic in the park, Kiki, Shout, and Marina help Twist come up with a rhyme for the word "music." In an effort to come up with possible rhymes for the word "music," Kiki considers the terms "blanket," "boom box," and "picnic basket." All of those failed to rhyme with "music," so Shout looked for other rhymes. Shout pondered whether the word "park" or the expression "picnic basket" may be a rhyme for "music," even though Kiki already suggested "picnic basket." Shout additionally believed that "music" and "oranges" could rhyme, but none of those words did.

Shout then hoped there was some rhyme for "music," like the term "chusic," despite the fact that it isn't a real word. Kiki and Marina get an idea from Shout's newly invented word, and they both applaud his solution. Shout was delighted to have discovered the answer, but he wasn't certain of his actions. Then Kiki told Shout that he "found" the word "chusic," which rhymes with "music." They could make up their own words when rapping, so even though "chusic" isn't a word, it was okay. They also suggested a few other fictitious words like "busic," "gusic," and "cusic." Then, by some miracle, Twist begins to speak. He lists several invented words that rhyme with "music," such as "nusic," "zusic," "ridiley scottily usick," "flukilty flusic," and "skinnamarinky-dusic." Twist eventually understands that he had the ability to talk again, and Kiki deduces that his voice returned when she came up with a rhyme for the word "music".

Twist began to compose a brief rap of his own while Marina provided the music because he now had his voice back. Later, the other Fresh Beats join him in rapping. While the Fresh Beats rap, they address the notion that if a word doesn't rhyme, you may make up your own words. Twist wants to sing another rap song, and for it to be the best rap ever, he needs Kiki, Shout, and Marina to sing along with him. Therefore, the Fresh Beats perform the song, "Rapping Rhyming Game", which once again conveys the idea that rapping allows you to improvise and invent your own terms.

The Fresh Beats complete their rap tune, having a blast as they go. Marina assures Twist that she, Kiki, and Shout will always be there for him if he ever loses his voice again. Twist thinks he'll always have a rhyme for any word, so he won't ever lose his voice again. The Fresh Beats close the day with their signature song, "Great Day".

Trivia[]

  • A Blue's Clues episode of the same name also exists.
  • This is the only episode not to have the band sing "Bananas" without instruments at the The Groovy Smoothie while in any other episode they would just sing a dance on the street and at the Groovy Smoothie.
  • This episode was filmed from 17th to 25th July 2009.
  • "Rapping Rhyming Game" song was filmed from 23rd July 2009.
  • The previous episode also did something similar with this premises having the group play their instruments while singing "No Problem We Can't Solve" and once again strangely those are the only episodes not to feature them singing those recurring songs without playing their instruments.

Twist's idea (with Marina's help)[]

  • Go to the fish store, buy a big fish with a big mouth, bring it back to the park, and get it rap for the picnic
